Plants
A poinsettia, Christmas cactus, Christmas Rose, or a miniature holiday tree can be a super gift for a plant lover.  Add a small book on house plants that has instructions for caring for the gift plant, miniature garden tools for potted plants, plant food appropriate to your gift and a small watering can.  A tray shaped basket is a good base for this collection or you could place everything on a decorative platter (second-hand store find?) or get an oversized terra-cotta planter dish (for below plants with drain holes) that you've decorated for the holidays.  Check the link above if you'll be giving poinsettias this year.  You'll find some good information on caring for the plant and even how to keep it past this holiday season.  A final consideration when giving plants:  Be sure the recipient doesn't suffer from allergies.

Candy & Nuts
A small tin or pretty candy dish makes a great container and leaves something to remember the gift by.  Use colored tissue paper or cello to wrap the finished 'basket' and add a beautiful bow and gift card.
          · Homemade candies are a real treat.  There are molds available and instructions a-plenty for all types of sweets.  Make a variety of different caramels, flavored nuts, mints or lollipops, or a combination.
          · Purchased candies can be individually wrapped from the manufacturer or you can use  colored plastic wraps to make little bundles and tie with a thin ribbon or raffia.
          · For the chocoholic there is always fudge.  Recipes abound for all kinds of fudge.  Some with nuts, some plain, some with mint, raspberry, rum, peanut butter flavorings added.  Make a variety and satisfy all your chocolate loving friends.

Mugs, Coffee, Tea, & Cocoa
This is great for both the collector and anyone who just likes a good cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.  Pick a mug you know your recipient would like.  You could even choose a really elegant bone-china cup and saucer.  This is one of those times a real basket makes a great base for the gift.  Add a sampling of gourmet coffees, teas, or hot chocolates that come in small enough containers to fit in the basket.  Add appropriate garnishes - like a package of miniature marshmallows for the cocoa basket or chocolate spoons to the coffee basket.  You can also add memories if you like for a really unique gift.  A single serving size liqueur is another add-on for a coffee basket.  (Amaretto is just one that's great in a cup of joe.)

Alcohol
This isn't to suggest a gift of intoxication, merely a special adult gift.  Please, don't give this to anyone who suffers from alcoholism or anyone under age.
          · A collection of small single-serve liqueurs and apéritif glasses can be accompanied by a few homemade or purchased fine chocolates.
          · Wine is often available in half bottles, one or two small bottles with appropriate glasses and a book on wine can be a fancy gift.  Be sure to include a corkscrew.  One full sized bottle presented in a wine cooler is also nice.  Tie the corkscrew to the neck of the bottle with a ribbon and secure it so it won't bang and clang against the bottle.  A really special Champaign to share New Year's Eve is an elegant idea.  Try to select a wine that the recipient would appreciate but maybe wouldn't buy for themselves.
          · An ice bucket is a good base for a gift of liquor.  If someone appreciates a fine Scotch or bourbon, add glasses and small bottles of their favorite mixes.  A selection of small bottles works best if you're using an ice bucket.
          · For the brandy connoisseur add snifters and a brandy warmer to the basket.
